I'm playing HOMM the same way you do (with a friend VS an AI), and I played it a lot with a friend for like 5+ years now. So, for the comparison now: WoG is a bit over the top for me.
I mean, it's a great work for sure, but everything feel overpowered. You have a way to upgrade your castles to some ridiculous level with mithril (like really ridiculous), your hero is more powerfull too due to +2 skills etc. Everything is more powerfull and for me and my friend this is a bit too much. The IA doesn't even stand a chance to win most of the time when we are playing together. On the other hand, HoTA feel way more balanced than WoG does. Most of the additions are (many) bugfixes and ameliorations to the game, some new objects and a brand new race to play with a new castle. Hot Chicken Sandwiches With Ritz Crackers. So yeah at the first glance WoG seems more interesting to play but after many many games, i would rather play HoTA than WoG.
