Other front wheel drive ratios (2.625:1, 19' wheel; 2.75:1, 16' wheel; 3.0:1, 21' front wheel)) come into play, which complicates the subject further. Different wheel sizes need to have drive ratios to compensate with the fixed speedo head ratio. Circa-1995, depending on model, the electronic speedometer begins to replace the front wheel mechanical drive speedometers.
Thanks, that is something I never knew. To clarify, 2240:60 means the speedometer cable is turning at 2240 revolutions per minute at 60 miles per hour. Or 2240 revolutions per mile traveled, if you prefer to think of it that way. Calculating backward from a typical 120/70R17 tire being about 1.8m in circumference, I figure the worm gear on the front wheel would have to have a 1:2.5 ratio, or to put it another way, the speedometer cable turns 2.5 times for every revolution of the front wheel. Hope this helps someone.
I'm assuming you have an electronic speedo set up already. Why are you choosing to go mechanical? You'll need a place to put the speedo drive, either front wheel or front sprocket. On the front axel, if your bike doesn't already allow space for a mechanical drive, you'll need to create spacers and reshim your entire front end to make things work. There might not be enough room for this.
With a front sprocket drive, you'll need to create a bracket that attaches the drive to the bolt on the front sprocket. Both of these options require more than just already made, aftermarket parts.
It will require some custom fab work and money.
Internally powered speedometers use a replaceable battery to power themselves. They do not require any power wires to be attached to the vehicle they are being used on.
